Enter the area and depth, then pick the gradation. That last choice is the one that matters. Limestone is sold by number, the numbers describe the size range, and each behaves differently: #57 drains and will not compact, #411 packs down hard, screenings level but hold water.

Limestone Cost prices by the ton or by the yard, whichever your quarry quotes. The two are not interchangeable, and each gradation has its own density, so the conversion is handled for you rather than left as a guess.

Density is what makes limestone different from a generic stone calculation, a cubic yard runs from about 1.35 to 1.55 tons depending on how much fine material is in the mix. More fines means fewer voids, so more weight per yard.

Worked example
A 40 × 12 ft area, 4 in of #411, 5% waste:
- Area: 40 × 12 = 480 sq ft
- Volume: 480 × 0.333 = 160 ft³ = 5.93 yd³
- Plus 5%: 6.22 yd³
- Weight: 6.22 × 2,900 = 18,047 lb = 9.02 tons
The same area in #57 would be the same 6.22 yards but only 8.40 tons, because clean stone has more voids. If your supplier prices by the ton, the gradation changes the bill even when the volume does not.
What the result means
The number is a size range, not a brand. #57 is about three quarters of an inch with the fines washed out; #411 is the same top size with the dust left in. That single difference decides whether the material drains or compacts, and they are not interchangeable.
Clean stone will not compact. #57 stays loose by design, that is what makes it drain. If you want a surface that packs hard and stays put, you need fines in the mix, which means #411 or screenings.
Yards are exact, tons are an estimate. Volume is geometry. Weight depends on gradation, moisture and how tightly the pile settled, so treat the tonnage as a good approximation and ask the supplier what their yard actually weighs.
Common mistakes
- Using #57 for a driveway surface. It will not lock together, so it rolls under tyres and migrates to the edges. Use #411 on top.
- Using screenings where water has to drain. The fines seal it. Screenings level beautifully and then hold water against whatever is underneath.
- Ordering compacted volume. Stone arrives loose and compacts about 20%. Order the loose volume or the finished depth comes up short.
- Assuming one density for all limestone. The range is 1.30 to 1.50 tons a yard. Over ten yards that is two tons of difference.
- Skipping the base course on soft ground. A thick surface course over mud is a rut waiting to happen. Coarse stone first.
Frequently asked questions
How many tons of limestone do I need?
Work out the volume in cubic yards, then multiply by the density of the gradation. A 40 by 12 foot area at 4 inches is 5.93 cubic yards, which is about 8.6 tons in #411 at 2,900 pounds per yard, or about 8.0 tons in #57 at 2,700.
What is the difference between #57 and #411 limestone?
Both are about three quarters of an inch at the top size, but #57 is washed clean of fines and #411 keeps the dust. Clean #57 drains and will not compact; #411 packs down into a hard surface and sheds water instead of passing it. They are not interchangeable.
How much does a cubic yard of limestone weigh?
Between about 2,600 and 3,000 pounds, or 1.3 to 1.5 tons, depending on the gradation. Material with more fines weighs more per yard because there are fewer voids. Ask your quarry for their figure if the order is large.
How deep should limestone be on a driveway?
Four to six inches of coarse base and two inches of finer surface for a residential drive on reasonable ground. Soft or wet ground needs more base and often a geotextile underneath. Depths are compacted depths, so order about twenty percent more loose material.
What limestone compacts the hardest?
Anything with fines in it. #411 and screenings both compact hard because the dust fills the voids between the larger pieces and locks them together. Washed gradations like #57 and #8 stay loose no matter how much you roll them.
Is limestone the same as crushed stone?
Limestone is one type of crushed stone, and in much of the United States it is the one you get when you order crushed stone. Granite and trap rock are the common alternatives and run slightly heavier per yard. The arithmetic is the same; only the density changes.

Densities are typical loose figures for crushed limestone and vary with quarry, moisture and gradation. Volume is exact arithmetic; tonnage is an estimate, confirm with your supplier before a large order.
Compaction allowance covers the difference between loose delivered volume and finished compacted depth. Twenty percent is typical for crushed stone and varies with the material and the compaction effort.
The gradation numbers are the standard sizes in ASTM D448, which is why a #57 from one quarry matches a #57 from another.
