How to use the Stud Calculator
Enter the wall and the spacing, then, and this is the part that matters, the number of corners, wall intersections and openings. Those three add studs that no length-divided-by-spacing calculation produces, and on a real wall they come to fifteen or twenty percent of the total.
Plates run the full length of the wall regardless of spacing. A single bottom plate with a double top plate is three runs of the wall length, which is usually more linear feet of lumber than people expect.

The + 1 is the stud at the far end of the run. Everything after that line is the reason a stud take-off is not a division problem.

Worked example
A 24 ft wall, 8 ft high, 16 in on centre, two corners, one intersection, two openings:
- Field studs: floor(288 ÷ 16) + 1 = 18 + 1 = 19
- Corners: 2 × 3 = 6
- Intersection: 1 × 2 = 2
- Openings: 2 × 4 = 8
- Subtotal: 35 studs, plus 10% = 39
- Plates: 24 × 3 = 72 linear feet
The spacing calculation alone gives 19. The wall actually needs 35 before waste, nearly double.
What the result means
The extras are not waste, they are framing. Corners, tees and openings are structural and they are countable. Rolling them into a percentage allowance is how a job ends up two studs short on the last wall.
Plates are linear feet, not pieces. Three runs of a 24 ft wall is 72 feet of plate stock, which at 8 ft lengths is nine pieces on its own, before a single stud.
Advanced framing changes the counts. Two-stud corners with drywall clips, single top plates and 24 in spacing all reduce the stud count meaningfully, and are worth knowing about if you are also paying for the insulation that goes between them.
Common mistakes
- Dividing length by spacing and stopping. That number is the field studs only, and on a normal wall it is barely half the answer.
- Forgetting the stud at the end of the run. Spaces plus one, always.
- Leaving out the plates. Three runs of the wall length is a lot of lumber and it is easy to miss on a materials list.
- Ignoring cripples. The short studs above a header and below a window sill are at the same spacing and add up over several openings.
- Buying 8 ft studs for an 8 ft wall. Precut studs are 92⅝ in so that stud plus three plates lands at 8 ft 1½ in of finished height. Buying full 8 ft studs means cutting every one.
Frequently asked questions
How many studs do I need for a 24 foot wall?
Nineteen field studs at 16 inch centres, but a real wall with two corners, one intersection and two openings needs about 35 before waste. The spacing calculation gives you barely half the answer on its own.
How many studs per corner?
Three in traditional framing, two forming the corner and one as backing for the drywall on the inside face. Advanced framing uses two studs plus drywall clips, which saves lumber and leaves room for insulation in the corner.
How many studs around a window or door?
Four as a baseline: two king studs running full height and two jack studs carrying the header. Wide openings need doubled jacks, and you also need cripples above the header and below a window sill at the normal spacing.
Why are precut studs 92 5/8 inches?
So that a stud plus a single bottom plate and a double top plate comes to 97 and an eighth inches, just over eight feet, which lets a standard 8 foot drywall sheet run horizontally with a little play. Buying full 8 foot studs means cutting every one.
Should studs be 16 or 24 inches on centre?
Sixteen is the traditional default and is required in some load cases. Twenty-four on centre with 2 by 6 studs is standard advanced framing, uses about a third fewer studs and leaves more room for insulation. Load, height and sheathing all bear on it, check code.
How much plate lumber do I need?
The wall length times the number of plate runs. A single bottom plate and a double top plate is three runs, so a 24 foot wall needs 72 linear feet of plate stock, nine 8 foot lengths, before any studs.
Sources and assumptions
Stud counts per corner, intersection and opening follow conventional US platform framing. Advanced framing details differ and generally reduce the count.
The 92⅝ in precut stud length assumes a single bottom plate and a double top plate under a nominal 8 ft ceiling.
Headers, cripples, blocking, fire blocking, hold-downs and hardware are not counted here. Header sizing is a structural decision governed by span and load.
Spacing requirements come from code and depend on stud size, wall height, load and sheathing, this tool counts material, it does not specify a wall.
