How to use the Soffit Calculator
Measure the eave length all the way round the building, every horizontal run that has an overhang. Then measure the overhang from the wall face to the back of the fascia, which is the width the soffit panel has to span.
Add the gable rake separately if the rakes are boxed in. Rake overhangs are usually narrower than eave overhangs, and forgetting them is the single most common reason a soffit order comes up short.
The Venting panel answers a different question: whether the panels you picked actually move enough air for the attic underneath.

Panel coverage is the printed width, not the panel width. A 16 in panel that locks into the next one covers 16 in of soffit; check the spec sheet if the two differ.
Worked example
A house with 120 ft of eave, a 24 in overhang and 60 ft of boxed rake at 12 in:
- Eave soffit: 120 × 2 = 240 sq ft
- Rake soffit: 60 × 1 = 60 sq ft
- Total: 300 sq ft, plus 10% = 330 sq ft
- A 12 ft × 16 in panel covers 16 sq ft → 21 panels
- Fascia: 120 + 60 = 180 lf, or 15 twelve-foot lengths
- J-channel: about 360 lf, both edges of every soffit run
- Venting for a 1,600 sq ft attic at 1 : 300: 768 sq in total, 307 to 384 at the ridge, 384 to 461 in the soffit
What the result means
Soffit is area, fascia is length. They are ordered in different units and it is easy to price one against the other by mistake. A 24 in overhang doubles the soffit area of a 12 in overhang while the fascia stays identical.
Vented panels do nothing without a clear path. Insulation stuffed into the eave blocks the airflow the vent was bought for. Baffles keep the channel open from the soffit up to the attic.
The channel is half the trim order. Every soffit run needs support on both edges, J-channel or F-channel at the wall, and the fascia or another channel at the outer edge.
Common mistakes
- Leaving the gable rakes out. They are soffit too if they are boxed in, and they are usually a different width.
- Ordering fascia in linear feet of overhang. Fascia follows the eave, not the overhang width.
- Mixing solid and vented without checking the net free area. If half the panels are solid, the venting is roughly half what the spec sheet claims.
- Blocking the vent with insulation. The most common way a correctly-vented roof still fails.
- Forgetting the channel. It is easily two hundred feet on an ordinary house and it never appears on the panel count.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate how much soffit I need?
Multiply the total eave length by the overhang width to get square feet, then add the boxed gable rakes at their own width. Divide by the coverage of one panel and add about ten percent. A 120 foot eave with a 24 inch overhang is 240 square feet before the rakes.
How much fascia do I need?
Fascia is simply the eave length plus the rake length in linear feet. It does not depend on the overhang at all. Divide by your stock length and round up, allowing an extra length for the mitres at outside corners.
How much soffit venting does an attic need?
The base requirement is one square foot of net free vent area for every 150 square feet of attic floor. That halves to one in 300 when the upper vents supply between 40 and 50 percent of the total and sit within three feet of the ridge. A 1,600 square foot attic at one in 300 needs about 768 square inches, of which 384 to 461 belongs in the soffit and 307 to 384 at the ridge.
Do all soffit panels need to be vented?
No. Many houses run every third panel vented or use centre-vented panels throughout. What matters is the total net free area and that it is spread along the eave, not concentrated at one end.
How much does soffit and fascia cost?
Vinyl soffit runs roughly two to three dollars a square foot in material and aluminium fascia around three dollars a linear foot, with trim on top. Installed prices are typically two to three times the material because most of the work is on a ladder.
What is the difference between J-channel and F-channel?
Both hold the edge of the soffit. F-channel has a flat nailing flange that fastens to the wall and is the usual choice on the wall side; J-channel is a simple slot and is used where the panel tucks behind trim or against the fascia board.
Sources and assumptions
Panel coverage figures are typical for 12 ft vinyl soffit at 16 in printed width. Check the manufacturer spec sheet, printed width and overall width differ on some profiles.
Ventilation ratios follow IRC R806.2. The base requirement is 1:150. The 1:300 exception applies where “not less than 40 percent and not more than 50 percent” of the required area is provided by ventilators in the upper portion, located not more than 3 ft below the ridge, with the balance at the eaves. In Climate Zones 6, 7 and 8 the exception also involves a Class I or II vapour retarder on the warm-in-winter side of the ceiling. Note that too much ventilation at the ridge disqualifies the allowance just as surely as too little. Editions and local amendments vary; confirm with your building department.
Net free area per linear foot is a manufacturer figure and varies widely between profiles, 8 to 10 sq in per ft is typical for fully vented vinyl.
